Cary Elwes was born on 26th October of 1962 in the Westminster of London in England. His full name is Ivan Simon Cary Elwes and is Tessa Kennedy, a socialite and interior designer, and Dominic Elwes, a portrait painter. His mother later married a film producer named Elliott Kastner. He has 2 older brothers who are successful in their career as him. His brother Damian Elwes is a famous British artist, and another brother Cassian Elwes is a film producer. He came from an elite family background where his grandparents were industrialists, diplomats, and painters.

Elwes served as an altar boy growing up in a Roman Catholic family. He attended Harrow School for his schooling and joined a drama school called London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
