Early Life

Sara Ramirez was born in Sinaloa, northwest of Mexico, on 31st August 1975. Her parents got divorced when she was just eight, after which she moved to San Diego with her mother. She was interested in music from a very young age. Her acting career started in high school after she started performing for the school production.

She studied at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts after passing audition and went on to complete her high school from there. She then graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the Juilliard School. She also trained as a vocalist while in Juilliard. She is also fluent in both English and Spanish.

In Theatre

Sara Ramirez’s professional career started from theatre production after she was given the role of Wahzinak in the 1998 musical play “The Capeman”. The play ran at Marquis theatre from January to March in 1998. She was then part of “The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm” as a performer in 1999. She then went on to work as Felicia in the autobiographical musical “A Class Act”, which was being performed at the Ambassador Theatre in 2001. The same year, she was also part of “Dreamgirls” at the Ford Centre for Performing Arts.

She was then featured as a Performer for “The Vagina Monologues” at Westside Theatre in 2002 after which she was not seen in theatre for almost three years until in 2005. She was part of the musical comedy “Spamalot” as The Lady of the Lake. The play was being performed at the Shubert Theatre. 

  

In film/television

Her first appearance on the big screen was from the 1998 romantic comedy film “You’ve Got Mail” as Rose. The film also featured Tom Hanks. It was a commercial success grossing over $250 million against a budget of $65 million. Sara was seen as Lieutenant Vena in the 2000 television film “Star Patrol”. She was also part of the 2000 sitcom “Spin City” for the episode “About Last Night”. In 2002, she made a brief appearance as a Police officer in the superhero film “Spider-Man”. She then starred in “Washington Heights”, “Baseball Wives”, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Chicago” in the same year.

She made small appearances in “As the World Turns” and “Dora the Explorer”. Her next major appearance was in the 2006 medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy”. She was seen in the role of Calliope Torres for 241 episodes of the show from season 3-12 after few recurring roles in season 2.

She voiced Queen Miranda in the 2016 animated movie “Elena and the Secret of Avalor”. She had given her voice to Queen Miranda on the 2012-18 animated series “Sofia the First”. Her next voice role was as Kat Sandoval for “Madam Secretary” in 2017.

She has also voiced Lammy for the videogames “Unjammer Lammy” and “PaRappa the Rapper 2”.

She is an activist for the LGBT community and rights. She shared Ally for Equality Award for her work towards LGBT rights in 2015.
