Early Life
Born in Putnam Valley on 26th April 1977 to Thomas Welling; ex-executive of General Motors and Bonnie Welling; a home engineer Tom Joseph Welling is the second youngest child of the family. Welling has a younger brother and two older sisters. Welling’s family migrated frequently and spent time in Wisconsin, Delaware, and Michigan. He completed his High School from Okemos High School, Michigan from where he graduated in 1995. During his high school years, he was acting in plays but later transitioned to sports and has played baseball, soccer, and basketball. He chose to work in construction instead of going to college, although he got good grades in high school.
Career
Early Career
Tom Welling was discovered by Jennifer Starr while working at a construction site who then suggested him to try for modeling. Starr was trying to find new and young faces for the Tommy Hilfiger campaign. Before modeling for Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Abercrombie & Fitch Tom worked for the Louisa Modeling Agency until 2000. While working for agencies in Los Angeles, he made an appearance in the music video for Angela Via’s “Picture Perfect”. He later admitted not liking modeling and pursued acting to express his emotions.
In Television
His first major appearance in TV was from the 2001 CBS drama “Judging Amy” where he took the role of Rob Meltzer. He then made small appearances in the Sci-fi sitcom “Special Unit 2” as a male victim and in “Undeclared” as Tom; a prototype.
He was then featured as the lead actor in the WB superhero drama “Smallville” as Clark Kent. He was selected from several people after a nationwide audition for the role. It was later reported that he rejected the role twice before accepting after reading the script. His role in the series made him in the list of “Breakthrough Stars of 2001” by people’s magazines and won him a Teen Choice Award. He continued the role of Clark Kent until the end of the series in 2011. He has acted in all the 217 episodes of the series and is the only one doing so. He reprised his role as Clark in one of the episodes of the 2019 series “Batwoman”.
After “Smallville” his next appearance in Television was in the 2017 Fox comedy-drama “Lucifer” in the role of the main antagonist of the third season; Lieutenant Marcus Pierce/Sinnerman/Cain.
In film
Tom Welling spread his wings into the film industry from the 2003 family comedy “Cheaper by Dozen” as Charlie Baker. He was then seen in the role of Nick Castle in the 2005 remake of the 1980 horror film “The Fog” while still working in “Smallville”. He replayed his role as Charlie Baker in the sequel of “Cheaper by Dozen” the same year.
He was then featured in the film adaption of Vincent Bugliosi’s book “Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy”, “Parkland”. He then appeared in the 2014 sports drama “Draft Day” as Brian Drew; a veteran quarterback.

Welling has acted as a co-executive producer in the ninth season of “Smallville” and later turned into an Executive Producer for the show. He was also the Executive Producer of “Hellcats”; a comedy-drama created by Kevin Murphy which aired on The CW from 2010-2011.
As a Director
He has also tried his luck in the direction sector from his first directorial debut “Fragile” an episode of the fifth season of “Smallville”. He has also directed a few other seasons of the series including the final two episodes, “Patriot” and “Booster”.

He then dated Jessica Rose Lee from 2014 for four years until their engagement in 2018. The couple got married in 2019 at Sunstone Vineyards and Winery. They have a son together.
He occasionally plays golf and loves the show, Seinfeld. His younger brother Mark is also an actor. He was called a superman after he saved a woman from being mugged. Welling currently resides in Los Angeles.
